Augustus Media is an award-winning Middle Eastern digital media company based in Dubai, with branches across the Middle East. Their mission is to become the modern media company of choice in the Middle East.
Augustus Media is the mother company of multiple brands: LovinDubai, which launched back in 2015 then went on to launch in six other cities by 2022. It has now become the number one Dubai Lifestyle Publishing Brand, with over 3 million followers and 14 million page views monthly. Smashi is another brand under Augustus Media, which is a live streaming service from the heart of the Arab world that covers the most innovative products, services and technologies that enhance our daily lives. Smashi has over 2 million subscribers on Snapchat.
Previously located in a busy, high-rise commercial tower in JLT, Dubai, they needed to scale up to a bigger space that would accommodate their growing team and business activities. They relocated to a warehouse in Production City, transforming a 950 SQM raw warehouse into a high functioning office space and studio.
They also required soundproofed broadcasting studios where local news and media brands can host daily talk shows with guests from all over the industry.
This was an exciting challenge for the design team, as the space needed to accommodate various work modes where independent, focused work is supported while also encouraging open and creative group discussions. To carry out this project, we collaborated with Blabberhouse, a multidisciplinary design entity focused on interior, product and material design, and Mediapreneur, a media consultancy that offers technical digital services. The build was done by Motif Interiors who have over 10 years of experience in Dubai and have completed over 800 projects.
At the heart of the design’s concept is the story of Augustus the Emperor. The essence of this historical legend was infused throughout the architecture of the space. At the entrance, guests are welcomed by 4-meter-high Roman columns. As they journey on, there are more subtle references to Augustus such as “The Amphi” which is an open meeting area with step seats inspired by the style of Roman amphitheaters. As they reach the studios, guests can take a seat at the “oasis” which is situated at the center of the studio, where live shows can be viewed.
The design team’s approach was to bring visual appeal across the whole office, making every corner a potential backdrop for content creators who often visit the space. The mezzanine floor was completely renovated, having its walls demolished to create a balcony-like area overlooking the ground floor and allowing natural sunlight to penetrate through to the CEO’s office.
“How to find a designer to match your vision, is the ultimate question of any entrepreneur, product creator, or marketer. In our case, it was to build what we called 'Project Colosseum', a 12,000 square ft modern media studios (5 in total) and office space in Dubai Production City.
We took a chance on Lamees, and she more than delivered. The result has turned out to be incredible, even in a city that amazes with its interior architecture all the time, guests are wowed at our space, our employees are at home and our work is function and Lamees with her company Consoul by LH did this by immense attention to detail, persistence and a constant pursuit of perfection. From planning, research (staff surveys), meetings to understand the company vision, the name Augustus, the links to Roman History (ending up with Roman Columns as a nod to their invention of concrete). Lamees went beyond her appointed role, overseeing our chosen broadcast partner, and supporting with the selection, and management of the fit-out company. On countless occasions, design imperfections were spotted, and replacements, starting from scratch, were relentlessly insisted on.
Lamees wouldn't take no for an answer, and everything had to be exactly as per the renders. The space looks contemporary and slick, each day it is complemented on and we always credit the designer. But more than that it's a space which could have gone wrong, we could have felt the investment should have gone elsewhere, or the studios weren't needed, or not have been happy with the quality, the look - but because we had the right partner from the start, none of those situations came to pass.
